Before you set anything up, it is worth understanding why the workshop is shaped the way it is. The setup checklists later in the book make more sense once you know what they are in service of.

This part covers three things:

• 2  Teaching philosophy: the teaching philosophy. What kind of room you are trying to create, and the few principles that drive every decision in the workshop.
• 3  The shape of the course: the shape of the course. How pre-course work, in-class hands-on exercises, and the wrap-up fit together, and the side benefits learners pick up along the way.
• 4  The concept drawings: the concept drawings. Four hand-drawn diagrams that assemble stage by stage on the slides as the summary of each block, and the concept maps that bookend the day.
